I was told that the Breckneck Cemetery was not always where it is today and that it was moved to make room for a road. I don't know if this is true or not. ********************************************************************** Additional Information ******************************************************************** As one of the persons who worked for over 2 years reading all Franklin Twp. cemetery stones and helping compile Volume I of Franklin Twp. Cemeteries.[& in which this cemetery is listed], I want to correct your comment & that of James Storch concerning the former location of this small cemetery. Breakneck Creek is located somewhere near, but not that close, however at some point the cemetery became known as Breakneck Cemetery. It was formerly known as Shirtliff Family Cemetery. The first burial was in 1839; last burial in 1916. The cemetery was located on a hill abt 300 yrds from Rte. 59 and & a little west of Rhodes Rd. in Franklin Twp. The remains were reintered in Standing Rock Cemetery in 1970 because the land was sold to K-Mart, where a K-Mart store was ultimately built very close to the original cemetery. [part of the old cemetery is now paved over & the garden center of this K-Mart store sits on part of the land.] |
