"Honne Tatemae" is a Japanese term describing the human personality. Honne signifies the truth or one's real feelings; tatemae represents the surface or face one shows to the world. It is almost like "hypocrisy" in the west although in Japan the concept does not carry such negative connotations. Tatemae is seen as a necessary social tool to smooth relations with others, the oil in society's cogs.
