Race Name: Breen (plural: Breen)
HISTORY & CULTURE: Only recent Breen history, specifically their role in the latter stages of the Dominion War, is better known to the Federation. They joined the Dominion in 2373, having been promised a large share of the Alpha Quadrant once the Dominion won the war, including Earth and the Federation. When the Federation developed a successful means to defend themselves against the Breen weaponry, the Dominion responded by drawing themselves back into a tight defensive line around Cardassia Prime. A combined Federation, Klingon, and Romulan force pushed through the Cardassian/Breen defensive lines and liberated the planet. When the Dominion surrendered the Breen were left with little choice but to do likewise rather than face the prospect of open warfare with the Federation, Klingon, Romulan and Cardassian forces simultaneously.
BIOLOGY:
The Breen are one of the very few major species who have evolved on a non-class M world. The Breen homeworld has an average temperature of approximately 220 Kelvin, a record low for any inhabited planet.
They have evolved with a unique physiology in order to cope with this ultra-cold environment; although they breathe a fairly standard oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere at close to normal pressure, the Breen have no blood or other liquid circulatory system. Instead, their body is permeated by millions of tiny hollow tubules which are open to the skin. These allow oxygen to be carried directly into the body; once there it is absorbed directly through the skin to be used by the internal organs. A similar process carries the waste gasses back out again. The Breen reproductive cycle is also unusual, in that they commonly produce offspring at a very early age.
Normal Breen body temperature is -38 C; exposure to temperatures above -13 C will kill a Breen within minutes.
The Breen wear an all-covering refrigeration suit while outside of their homeworld. Since no reliable reports had ever returned from Breen, most conjecture that the Breen only tolerate cold temperatures, and that they might be furry inside of the suits. Besides looking menacing, the suit also disguises their voices, making it sound to others a grating electronic noise much like radio static at high frequency.
