Thursday April 4th 2002 saw history made as the BriSCA Heat online F1 season kicked off in superb style at Coventry International Motorspeedway. The entry consisted of English, Scottish, Dutch and even an exiled Scot now living in America, with the total entry being an amazing 40 drivers, all ready to do battle on their PCs. And so the stage was set, with 9 Heats and 2 Consolations whittling the field down to 12 drivers for the Feature Final that had the added bonus of World Qualifying Points up for grabs. Despite early reservations about undergraded drivers, 6 of the 9 heats were won by red tops with Corny #391 and Trash #250 winning both their heats to give them a top-scoring slot into the Final. Other heat wins went to red tops Trance #87 and HotRod #247 along with yellow tops Sly #732, Michael #2 and Gspeed #188. Despite having won a heat, Michael #2 still had to go into a Consolation but managed to take the victory with Skeet #31 also scraping through with a Consolation victory. That gave us 12 drivers for the first Final of the season and what a cracker it was! As expected, the early pace setters were the white and yellows with Chewy #102 bursting off into an early lead with Skeet #31 closing him down in 2nd place. However, as the gap closes, Skeet takes a corner too deep and that allows the following pack to close up and pounce, putting Skeet towards the fence and down to 10th within 2 corners. It doesnt end there as Chewy gets caught up as the red tops come flying through with bumpers flying left, right and centre! As the field sorts itself out, Trance #87 manages to reel in leader Mac #219 to take the first Final of 2002 with AndyH #148 taking a steady 3rd place. Four Grand Nationals finish off the evenings action with Mac #219, Mart #435, AndyH #148 and Sly #732 taking the victories and Trance recovering to 4th in his GN from the lap handicap. The following Thursday saw Texel the venue for what would be an interesting meeting. Despite the very rough terrain, once again the lower graders took a bit of catching with Chewy #102 making good use of his white grading to take maximum points from the heats along with blue roof JayW #35. Yellow graders Skeet #31, Michael #2 and Mitch #28 also racked up a Heat win each along with blue top AndyH #148 and red top Prydie #9. A few big name casualties failed to make the cut for the Consolations, however Scrapman #53 and HotRod #247 made it and also won their respective last chance qualifying slots into the Final. Once again the Final served up some cracking action but once again the red tops rose to the challenge with HotRod #247 running out the winner after overhauling long-time leader Chewy #102. HotRod made it back up to 2nd in his Grand National behind winner Skeet #31 with AndyH #148, Dragon #428 and Barney #52 also notching up GN victories. After 2 meetings, AndyH #148 currently leads the points but is only 8points ahead of younger brother Trash #250 with Chewy #102 only a further 2points behind him. 46 drivers have scored points so far, with the next meeting being a World Qualifer on Thursday 18th April at Long Eaton. The F2 chaps kicked off their season on Monday April 8th at the Racewall and have also had a meeting at Kings Lynn on April 15th. At Cowdenbeath, although the heats were dominated by English drivers, it was a Scotsman Mac #717 who rose to the top in the Final despite having to qualify via a Consolation. The Harris Brothers Trash #512 and AndyH #148 proved that they are competitive in the F2s as wel by taking maximum points from their heats, although both drivers were well down the order in the Final. At Kings Lynn the following week, Trash once again took maximum points with AndyH also bagging a heat win and HotRod #247 taking his 2nd heat win in 2 weeks. However, it was the flying real F2 driver Colin Dimelow #270 who took top honours in the Final with Jok #79 taking 2nd slot ahead of Trash in 3rd. The Saloons kicked off their season on Tuesday April 16th and it was back to winning ways for Jok #68 who took maximum points by winning both his heats and the Final despite some tough opposition from Autospeed reporter AliP #46. Dino #126 and AndyH #636 also put up some strong performances with the curse of the backmarkers once again hindering Skeet #99. After the Allcomers races, the Scotland versus England score was 48points to 46points in Scotlands favour. Kings Lynn is the next destination for the tin-top brigade on April 30th.
