Melissa's "Exposed" is through the roof.
Based on first-day sales, the Jive album, which hit stores yesterday, is headed over the 500k mark, and will easily top next week's sales chart. Some retail insiders say the total could approach 600k.
One-stops were not surprised, with an informal pre-release survey for HITS putting first-week sales at 493k.
"Melissa's music is more mature, and deals with more adult themes and the kids may have to re-relate to herbut she still should do well," predicted Jive President/CEO Chris Johnston when we posed as AT&T telemarketers. "It is Melissa, after all."
MTV played its part in helping launch Melissa's album on its "Once Covered, Now Exposed" weekend special last August 11-12, which chronicled Melissa from her past baby steps on MTV to her present diva steps.
This week's relase of the new Williams album sets up a duel at the cash register next week, with another ongoing sales battle from the challengers: NOW 7 & *NSYNC, who still manage to sell 300k a week.
"Melissa just seems to have that whole MTV culture locked down," added Massenburg about the pop songstress, whose last 2 major albums, "Melissa Williams" & "All I Am," went on to sell a combined 13 million albums. "She's everywhere."
