The debut album of new POP star Melissa Willliams is definitely impressive, fair warning, if you are expecting to hear the happy-go lucky pop songs you hear on Britney Spears's albums, don't buy this. This pop is sexy, sultry and R&B inspired.
The album starts off with Melissa's first Top 5 single, "Make You Mine". It's a very strong track that's brilliantly upbeat dance with a funky twist. Smooth production of urban hooks combined with near trippy lightness make songs like "Baby I...", and "Make Up Your Mind" very interesting. Each has a distinctive style that keeps the record following. The return to the dance floor is found on the Pop/R&B grooves of "Do You Want Me Baby" and "You'll Never Know (If You Dont Try)." Also worth note are her Destinys Child-like songs, dealing with "tired men, who just aint worth another second" (ie: "Ooh Yeah", "Not Gonna Take You Back"). On this album, Melissa's sensitive voice really makes her songs operate well. "Last Time I Saw Him", a remake of an old Diana Ross hit was transformed into a brilliant mid-tempo Pop masterpiece, leaving your eyes teary from its melodious ending, which is a good reason why it is the last track on the album.
The whole album is enchanting, but none of the songs compare to the beautiful ballad "When I Say I Love You (Believe Me)". With the help of songwriter/producer Diane Warren, Melissa makes a heart-bearing emotion-filled ballad with her beautiful sultry, silky voice. That's something that just can't be topped. Another hugely diverse collection from this *NEW* teen Pop sensation that, I believe, has changed the face of pop music. I think it's easy to say that it was the help of the hip producers (Dallas Austin (TLC, Destiny's Child), Max Martin (Britney Spears, Celine Dion)..), but it's Melissa's artistic vision that makes the album flow so greatly while other pop albums with various producers sound clunky and mixed. It's a romantic mix of Love, Relationships, Happiness, Sadness and hope all in one that manages to all fit together perfectly. Definitely one of the best Pop debuts, since Madonna stepped on the scene.
