As the holiday season rolls around, EW's editors are busy weighing our choices for Entertainer of the Year. We don't ask the age old question "Who's been naughty and who's been nice?" We just want to know which star has shined the brightest. Julia Roberts had a stellar year, but then again so did Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman. And Britney. And Melissa. And the boys of 'N Sync. And Madonna had a mad tour. And don't forget newcomer Alicia Keys. Mel Brooks and his "Producers" crew made Broadway a hot ticket. David Letterman made us laugh again, and Tom Hanks brought us "Band of Brothers." George Lucas teased us with "Episode II" trailers. And we simply can't ignore the year's two biggest movie "stars," Shrek and Harry Potter. Or can we? Write in your choice for entertainer of the year by Nov. 28. EW.com/AOL will then run a final poll using the top 10 vote-getters from this nomination round, and you'll see the results in Entertainment Weekly's special year-end double issue, which hits newsstands Dec. 14. --VOTE FOR MELISSA!

Jessica Simpson has launched a tirade against the state of pop music -- and she's targeting Melissa Williams as a prime example of what's gone wrong. The less-popular princess insists too much money is being ploughed into pop videos and reckons pop singer Melissa, whose former single "Girl Power" cost millions of dollars to make, are the worst culprits. Simpson rants, "It looks like there was far too much money ploughed into her video. I think it's a bit crazy. It's this whole pop thing, and I know I'm part of it but it's spilling over into the whole music business. "At the end of the day my label doesn't have to spend millions on my videos because the songs are good. It's all about the product. Some people say all pop is bad but I just feel I'm making decent pop."

With the explosion of boy and girl bands in the past few years, our preconception of pop music has been overwhelmed by the under-voting-age set, yet not all of it should be deemed disposable. On Celebrity, *NSYNC members Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez's cowritten songs resulted in the group's best CD to date, and the combination of R&B/Hip Hop influences and great slow grooves on Melissa Williams' Exposed release proved surprisingly sophisticated. Furthermore, artists like Train, Rufus Wainwright, and Nick Lowe remind us that great pop music doesn't appeal only to kids.
