3. DEVELOPMENT IN OKINAWA (Cont.)

The Rise of Ieyasu Tokugawa, 1603 AD
Tokugawa was a ruthless warlord who took control of Japan, declaring himself shogunate in 1603 AD. He had a genius for enslaving people. Tokugawa creates a highly regulated society (no freedom, no innovation, no new ideas - all punishable by torture and death). People created kata for everyday rules of behavior (how to dress, how to bow, how to cook). One lasting example from this period of Japan is the Japanese tea ceremony. Tokugawa seals the borders of Japan and prohibits contact with the West.

Tokugawa practiced mind control on an entire culture

Tokugawas Lasting Influence in Karate:
In many karate schools, it is considered rude and disrespectful to ask questions of a master. Schools that follow a more Western philosophy will readily answer students questions.

Tokugawa approves for Lord Shimasu to send 3,000 samurai to take over Okinawa in 1609 AD. Okinawa suffers double subordination of two countries. Okinawa was already considered a province of China. Tokugawa claims Okinawa a Japanese Colony in 1609.
