Kirkwood Chapter No. 358
Order of the Eastern Star
Kirkwood, Missouri
OUR YEARS IN RETROSPECT
It was decided that each member would be taxed ten cents ($.10) for refreshments, bringing our dues to two dollars and ten cents ($2.10), however it was later decided wed need another five cents ($.05) from each person attending a meeting to make ends meet. All banded together to purchase a piano in 1914 with a fifteen dollar ($15.00) down payment. Later that year, after all had labored in a play for a common cause and doing their best, the final payment was made on the piano.
It was in 1914 that the Chapter voted sufficient funds for the Worthy Matron to attend Grand Chapter in Kansas City, Missouri.
On December 21, 1914, Sister Lulu Heinzelmann was installed as our Worthy Matron. There were Grand Chapter Officers attending each meeting - just checking you understand.
In 1915 we purchased a coffee pot, tea pot and dish pan. All food, silver, etc., was brought and prepared in the little cloakroom, where we were meeting on the second floor of the Commerce Bank Building. Also in 1915 the floral march fund was instituted with sixty cents ($.60) being collected. For years this paid for the flowers that were sent to those members who were ill. Can you imagine just how far that money would go today?
In 1916 refreshments were again discussed and it was decided to serve them only on order of the Worthy Matron. The Lodge Brothers requested an itemized bill for the refreshments served them by the Sisters, but the Sisters decided that was unnecessary.
Janitorial service seemed to be a problem in those golden days (as it is today). It would cost anywhere from thirty-five cents ($.35) to fifty cents ($.50) depending on the number of cuspidors that had to be cleaned.
Refreshments were discussed in 1917! (Do you get the impression that the subject was equally as important then as it is now?)
Our Worthy Patron was called to serve our Country and was presented with a leather writing case. Lawn parties were popular and the Chapter was able to net one hundred eighty three dollars ($183.00) at one such affair. Ye Old Time Concert was also given; the tickets cost twenty-five cents ($.25) and all proceeds were given to the Masonic Home. Dont you wish you could have an evening of entertainment for that price?
In 1918 our Worthy Patron, Arch Kullmar, and his bride, Mabel, were introduced and invited to seats in the East. The members presented them with a set of silverware.
During the early years, it was not uncommon for the Worthy Matron to send someone out to get refreshments when she found out about a birthday.
