OUR YEARS IN RETROSPECT
As we celebrated our Nifty Ninetieth year, we remained truly proud of Kirkwood Chapter. It was a day to remember as we joined our hands and hearts and said Weve reached an important milestone, because we are 90.
Through the last five years we have had several Grand Chapter appointments of which we are justly proud. All have worked diligently on their various committees. We are still having our Annual Ham and Bean Dinner and our Salisbury Steak Dinner as our two main money makers. We have become outstanding in the District with these two dinners.
In 1998 Sister Lodene Haynes was our Worthy Matron. Brother David Bachhuber served by her side. During that year, Sister Virginia Fasnacht was honored for being a member of the Chapter for 75 years. She was given a pendant made for Sister Faye Kerr by her daughter. Sister Virginia was presented a pin at Grand Chapter. Brother Harry Heines, Sister Lucille Heitman and Sister Pauline Harbison were presented their 25 year pins. Sister Frances Jones was presented her 50 year pin in her home because of health problems. Brother Dual Slover was given an appointment as Grand Representative of Man-it-toba which he enjoyed to the fullest. This was the year that a trip was planned by Sister Shirley to go to Manitoba and so the Dirty Dozen were off for a wonderful adventure. Sister Barbara Stroup was given the honor of being tagged for the job of District Deputy Grand Matron by Sister Pearl Harrell.
In 1999, Sister Barbara Stroup was again called into service as Worthy Matron. Brother David Bachhuber served with her. During this year, Sister Shirley and Brother Dual made contact with Bozzay Florist to deliver flowers and we carried this project on each year. It was in this year that Sister Marlynn Finley was appointed as Grand Representative of British Columbia and the Yukon. The Chapter gave a reception which was enjoyed by all. Sister Marlynn was able to attend their Grand Chapter Session with Sister Mary Ann Kneip. We were fortunate to welcome Valley Park Chapter when they chose to come to us when their meeting place was claimed by the Missouri Highway Department. With their coming to us we welcomed several fine members. Among them were Brother Bob and Sister Sandy Higgins who brought their great talent for making our Friendship Night special with their wonderful ham which is recognized all over the country. Our Brother Walter Nichols became an experienced dishwasher! This was a very special year for Sister Jeannette Corrigan who received her 50 year pin.
In 2000, Marlynn Finley served in the East. Sister Shirley was appointed as our District Deputy Grand Matron and she made us proud. In this year we were able to make a gift of $10,000.00 to the Lodge to help with renovating the building (on which they are still working). Sisters Shirley Slover and Linda Bopp and Brother Louis Bopp received their 25 year pins. Sister Jean Garbe received her 50 year pin. With everything going on, Sister Shirley and Brother Dual took time off to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Sister Linda Bachhuber had a job promotion to Area Sales Manager at Famous-Barr. Sister Karen Jones was honored with an award for her work in helping to educate young people regarding AIDS.
In 2001 with Sister Shirley at the helm and Brother Dual at her side, we were again blessed with several Grand Chapter Committee appointments. We were happy for Sister Doris Amison who received first prize in structured verse at the Missouri State Convention of the National League of American Pen Women. Sister Ann Shadowens was honored for her positive attitude concerning her bout with cancer. We were all excited and pleased to learn that she was a winner in this battle. Sisters Lodene Haynes and Donna Arnaz received their 25 year pins while Sisters Jackie Sieberg, Lois Reinschmidt, LaVerne Marietta, Betty Sandstedt and Laura Kuhn together with Brothers Francis Marietta and Leo Pierce became 50 year members and received their pins. Sister Gladys Borders celebrated her 100th birthday this year. We were able to purchase a much new, needed and appreciated sound system this year.
Linda Bachhuber was a first-time Worthy Matron in 2002 and standing by her side was our ever faithful David Bachhuber (her husband). This year she and the Chapter were kept busy being the best possible officers because our Sister Shirley Slover was appointed at Grand Chaplain. This was a good year for 25 year pins, They were received by Sisters Lori Ann Gilley, Ruth Mannahan, Loretta Bridwell, Deborah Sandstedt and Gwen Boyd and by Brothers Thomas Kuhn and Jim Bridwell. Sister Shirley and Brother Dual gave us our beautiful Christian Flag. The Order was greatly saddened by the loss of our Worthy Grand Matron, Sister Doris Williams. Sister Adelle Whelove was swept off her feet when her name was called out at the Spring Banquet. She was appointed as Grand Representative of Connecticut. Sister Lodene Hayes was given the honor of Volunteer of the Year by the Nurses for Newborns Foundation. We also congratulated Sister Pauline Harbison on her appointment as Supreme Worthy Guardian of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Our sister Mary Dale Amison-DeWoskin earned her Master Sergeant stripe.
In 2003 Sister Barbara Stroup again served as Worthy Matron. Due to illness, Brother Walter Nichols had to resign as our Worthy Patron and Brother David Bachhuber - like the proverbial penny - returned to the East to serve our Chapter. Sister Barbara underwent back surgery and Sister Jeannette Corrigan (our Associate Matron) was called to serve in the East while Sister Barbara was recuperating. The Chapter served dinner to the Lodge on their election night. We were very delighted to be invited for the first time to observe initiation at Kirkwood DeMolay. Sister Adelle and her entourage attended Grand Chapter in Connecticut and enjoyed every moment of their trip. As expected, 2003 was as successful as our previous years.
. . . to be continued . . .
