Invitation

For 2007 the Odyssey Group explored the relationship between the accessibility of locations and tourism and other forms of economic activity in both developed and developing economies and regions.

This involved a meeting which was held on 31 October and 1 November hosted by the Centre for Innovation Knowledge and Development Open University, UK
and supported by
Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, Netherlands
and the
Rikkyo Amusement Research Centre, Rikkyo University Tokyo, Japan

The event combined virtual and physical meetings.

The different forms of participation are explained HERE

These discussions will also produce material to be made available through the OpenLearn project of the Open University, UK.

Themes

The workshop focussed on bridging the divide that impedes the collaborative advantage between stakeholders for value creation.

The issue of accessibility through tourism development and corporate social responsibility was pursued along four tracks of research interest. These were:

  • Hallmark Events Issues: Risk and Reputation Management
  • Corporate Social Responsibility and Destination Competitiveness: Ecological Modernization Scenarios
  • Virtual World Technologies: A Harmonization Approach
  • Congestion, Access and Sustainability: Prospects for Virtual and Physical Solutions

Each of these themes builds from research into movement and its role in social and economic interaction. General contributions dealing with the underpinning issues of mode, mobility demand and context were also welcome.

Papers and contributions were requested on the following topics:

  • Consumer demand for community tourism and CSR strategies
  • Strengths and limitations of the urban or rural community as the unit of organization for developing tourism
  • Opportunities for and impact of corporate involvement in community-based tourism development
  • ICT- systems to support group decision-making and develop trust in community-based tourism projects and between global and local stakeholders
  • Designing combined systems, that would assist communities to enhance their accessibility and connectivity within networks for sustainable development on the economic, cultural and social level.
