NEWS ITEM FROM THE NEVIS DISASTER MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT

The St. Kitts - Nevis Fire & Rescue Services (Nevis Division) in conjunction with the Nevis Disaster Management Department held a 2-day Search & Rescue (SAR) training Course for Fire & Rescue volunteers on the weekend of 3rd & 4th February at the Ministry of Communications, & Works Conference Room, Charlestown.

Topics covered in the workshop included Communications, Safety Procedures, Organisation of Response, Disaster Medical Operations, Rescue Operations, Critical Incident Stress and Vehicle Extrication. A practical session was also held in radio communications.

Lead instructor for the workshop was the Nevis SAR team leader, Fire Sub-Officer (FSO) Rommel Williams with assistance from Fire Officers (FO) Catherine Joseph and Julien Isaac. Fire Station Sub-Officer Clarence Hendrickson also instructed in several key topics.

A brief opening ceremony was held at the start of the workshop and included remarks by the Divisional Fire Officer (DFO) Harvey Hendrickson, Fire Station Sub-Officer Clarence Hendrickson, Nevis SAR team leader, Fire Sub-Officer (FSO) Rommel Williams and Lester Blackett, Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Department.

Participants were encouraged to fully assimilate and utilise the information learnt over the two days and the volunteer�s importance to the overall Fire & Rescue effort on Nevis was stressed. It was noted that only a few days ago the SAR skills been learnt was used to successfully find and rescue a missing individual at Hanley�s Road, Gingerland. Mr. Hester Rawlins, Fire Chief based in St. Kitts, gave his fullest support to the training workshop and to the inclusion of volunteers who will provide essential support and assistance to the regular Fire & Rescue personnel in Nevis.

The training course was the first part of a two part training for volunteers, with the second part to be held at the National Emergency Management Agency headquarters in St. Kitts from 12th to 16th February 2007.
