Hurricane Dean brushed Nevis on Friday 17th August, as it thundered through the Caribbean, passing between Martinique and St. Lucia with winds of 100 m.p.h. at 5 a.m.  Nevis experienced winds gusts up to 50 m.p.h. with sustained winds of 35 m.p.h. recorded at the airport, during the day.

Flights were disrupted at the Vance W. Amory International Airport and passenger ferry service was cancelled for Friday 17th August and most of Saturday 18th August, with the seas between Nevis and St. Kitts seeing substantial wave action.

The Charlestown waterfront road in Nevis, Samuel Hunkins Drive, was overtopped with breaking waves that occasionally disrupted traffic and impeded pedestrian access near the sea wall. Debris was also deposited on the road. A few trees around the islands were uprooted with many branches and leaves strewn about.

Government Departments closed at 12 noon after consultations were held with the Premier and Chairman of the Nevis Disaster Management Committee, as the weather deteriorated and the winds proved difficult to navigate in Charlestown and other areas of Nevis. Private sector companies generally closed earlier than their usual time of 4 p.m. following Governments lead.

The Electricity Department was kept extremely busy with numerous calls. They responded adequately throughout the day and evening with their line crews. Public Works Department and other response agencies were on alert following an Emergency Nevis Disaster Management Committee meeting held on Thursday 16th August, at the new Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) offices at Long Point, utilizing the first ever dedicated Emergency Operating Centre in Nevis.

At the meeting, Chairpersons of the various sub-committees of the Nevis Disaster Management Committee, District Chairpersons and Agency Heads gave reports as to their state of readiness and preparedness and their plans to mitigate the effects of the approaching Hurricane. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Lester Blackett, Director of the Department (NDMD) who briefed the meeting on the progress of Hurricane Dean utilizing state of the art display systems and hurricane specific programs.
