Power Vent Window Procedure

DISCLAIMER: This is the procedure I did on my car without a sunroof. It worked for me but your results may vary. Good luck.

Tools needed

Stripping interior Picture

  1. Disconnect battery.
  2. Remove glove box and kick panel under box.Picture
  3. Remove kick panel and knee pad under steering wheel.Picture
  4. Remove center console. Picture
  5. Remove shifter console. Picture
  6. Remove driver seat
  7. Remove all back seat cushions.
  8. Loosen rear window rubber gasket from inside car.
  9. Remove C-pillar covers
  10. Remove rear interior side panels.Picture
  11. Remove plastic entrance strip by unhooking from rear and sliding forward. Mine cracked. Still works though. Picture
  12. Pop hood.
  13. Remove hood latch and dead pedal kick panel. Picture
  14. Open fuse box and remove 4 screws holding top portion to bottom portion.Picture
  15. Push down fuse strip. Picture
  16. "Remove 4 screws holding fuse box to fire wall" Nope! Need x-ray vision. Skip. Picture. I used a 1/4 in drive, foot long extension to push from engine compartment into foot well and tape wires to it to fish them through.
  17. If you're not irate yet, too bad because now it's time to begin.

Laying Cable (literally speaking)

  1. Grab power supply harness and become familiar with it. Picture
  2. Send connection "A" to fuse box and fasten under nut with red wire under it. Picture
  3. Connect "Ba" to "Bc" and leave it handy. Picture
  4. Send connection "Da" to central electronics module and insert into green connector station 19. White plastic piece slides out. Leave connector open/handy. Picture

Laying Cable Pt.2

  1. Now grab supplementary harness and get to know it. Picture
  2. Send "E" and "F" to fuse box.
  3. Insert the leads into fuse strip station F13 by pulling side 1 of fuse strip out enough to clear desired station. Picture
  4. Secure "G" to ground point under "A" pillar under dash. Picture
  5. Send "Ia" to connector "Bc" from power supply harness. Picture ("for cars with s. roof, "Ia" connects to connector of same color.")
  6. Send "Ha" to same location but plug into connector of SAME color. Mine had about 10 wires and was about 3 inches long. Picture
  7. Fit relay "K" to wherever you can fit it. Mine did not fit where they say. It fit under steering column on relay socket.
  8. Send "L" to central electronics module and plug into station 18 on green connector. Reassemble and plug green connector back in.
  9. Send connectors "M and "N" under carpet to shift console. Send "P" and "O" back to where the rear seat used to be. Picture
  10. Install folding catches to window and "C" pillar. Center screws on long holes and tighten.
  11. Route flex shaft trough two holes in sheet metal and insert into catch. Picture
  12. Secure motor to sheet metal ensuring shaft is inserted in motor. Both motors are the same.
  13. Connect motors to harness. I did not use nylon straps for the shafts.
  14. If you got the extra trim pieces, look inside side panel. You should see a metal reinforcement for the curve with a cutout for the trim piece. Outline the trim piece flush with the edge and lined up with the metal cutout. Measure IN from the line 4mm from all three directions and cut. I used sheet metal shears for two cuts, Dremel tool with wheel for final cut. Picture
  15. Connect battery and pray it all works out.
  16. Cutout for shift console is 25mm x 82mm exactly. Picture. I measured on outside with a mechanical pencil to extend the hole. Then, I cut with a razor the soft flesh of the shift console and peeled it off. Now I have a perfect outline to cut with the Dremel. I used a sanding drum and a wheel for the corners.
  17. Put your parts bin back together so it once more resembles a BMW.
  18. Go celebrate and show your friends and family what you just blew close to $400 on. I did. Somehow they seemed less enthused than I was.

Special thanks to Alan Taur for the part numbers and to Heritage BMW in Hilton Head, SC for the instruction printout.

Partial thanks to Bekkers Imports for getting me all the parts promptly. Even though my wallet got lighter in the process.
