GEORGE O. ODHIAMBO (B. Env. Sc-Hons-KU, MSc.UoN)

ACADEMIC PROFILE

I started my academic career as an environmental scientist, obtaining a strong honours degree from Kenyatta University (Kenya) in October 1998, upon which I immediately joined the University of Nairobi's Institute of Nuclear Science for an MSc. program in Nuclear Science on a University of Nairobi scholarship.

During my studies at Kenyatta University, I obtained the following awards/honours:

RSEARCH EXPERIENCE

I have carried out and participated in a number of research programs especially in the areas of environmental pollution assessment, resource surveys and rural environmental planning and management.

1999-2000-I did a study on motor vehicle pollution within the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi city. This study, which forms my MSc. thesis work at the Institute of Nuclear Science, involved the assessment of respirable particulate matter (PM10-PM2.5), trace elements, ozone (O3), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), in the ambient air of Nairobi city. The findings of the study will be presented at the International conference on urban Transport and the Environment to be held at Lemnos in Greece on May 2001 as well as the NURT 2001 Third International Symposium on Nuclear & Related Techniques-Havan,Cuba

1998 (May to August)- During my field attachment at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI), I conducted research on the water quality of lake Victoria and the rivers within the catchment areas of the lake. My research findings were incorporated into the fisheries studies done by the European Union research team in Lake Victoria.

I also took part in the Kenya-Belgium Joint Research on Lake Victoria as part of the Kenya marine research team, my assignment being on limnological survey.

1997-I carried out a water quality assessment in river Nyando in Kisumu district. The focus of the study was on the impact of Muhoroni Sugar Factory on the water quality of Nyando River. Chemical analysis of the water samples for heavy metals and organic pollutants was carried out at the Institute of Nuclear Science's X-ray laboratory and the water quality laboratory of the Lake Basin Development Authority.

This work formed my final year research project at the faculty of environmental studies (Kenyatta University).

1996-During my second academic year at Kenyatta University, I took part in Rural Environmental Resource Survey and Planning at the Mtwapa settlement scheme in Kilifi District.

The study involved resources survey, appraisal and baseline studies after which our team came up with an action plan to enhance resource utilisation for the improvement of the living standards of the people at the settlement scheme. This study was part of the Rural Studio fieldwork in the second academic year in environmental planning and management..

WORK EXPERIENCE

1997-Worked as a polling clerk with the Electoral Commission of Kenya in the 1997 general elections.

1996 (February to May)-Worked as a research assistant in the Environmental Division of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA)-Kisumu. My assignment involved ecological surveys and collection and chemical water analysis of water samples from the rivers within the lake basin region.

Immediate Supervisor: Mr. R. Nzomo, Head of Environmental Division.

1995-Taught chemistry in form three and physics in form one at Barkowino secondary school in Siaya District from May to August when on vacation.

CAREER OBJECTIVES

I have great interest in environmental pollution monitoring, management and control research. My research interests lie within the field of urban air pollution studies, and extend from fundamental studies of atmospheric chemistry to human exposure to suspended particulates (especially the ones in the fine size range), trace elements, hydrocarbons (HCs), volatile organic carbons (VOCs), ozone and nitrogen oxides, mainly emitted by motor vehicles, as well as epidemiological studies involving these air pollutants.

I'm also interested in Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) which are becoming very important tools for environmental resource surveys and assessment, especially at the large scale.

I would therefore wish to further my studies in these fields to enhance my research skills.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

I participated in a number of community services and clean-up campaigns during my undergraduate studies as listed below:

Currently I'm an active member of Glory Worship Center and was sponsored by the church to for a leadership development training held at the Glory Institute of Leadership Development (GLID) to enhance my leadership skills as a youth leader in the church. I have since attended and successfully finished level 1 leadership course.

HOBIES

Swimming is my greatest interest since it refreshes my mind. I also enjoy listening to gospel music, reading magazines travelling and playing chess.

STATEMENT OF INTENT

As outlined earlier, my interest is in the area of environmental pollution assessment and control, with a focus on motor vehicles pollution. A number of studies in the developed countries have confirmed adverse health effects associated with the motor vehicle emissions.

Many urban centers in Kenya are characterised with an increase in motor vehicles, which is one of the main sources of urban air pollution. Very few studies, however, have been done on air pollution in these towns; even fewer (or none in some towns), have been done on motor vehicles emissions and their associated health effects.

I therefore intend to further my studies in this field of study to enhance my research skills on the same, as I intend to carryout epidemiological studies involving the main pollutants emitted by motor vehicles namely, respirable particulate matter, heavy metals, ozone, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. Some of these pollutants (respirable particulate matter and nitrogen oxides) also contribute to global warming, a current global environmental problem.
