One flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
~ Ken Kesey

Keep on Trucking: dont give up, keep developing your potential

What does America mean? nagged at Kesey when he wrote this book and Sometimes a Great Notion

Search for America
THOMAS WOLFE brilliant author
TIMOTHY LEARY chemistry professor discovers LSD
THOMAS WOLFE Electric Acid Koolaid Test

These three men and Ken Kesey go on a trip all over most of the USA to discover America.

Ken Kesey was an intellect who asked a question and was never satisfied with the answer.
He was influenced by political events at the time: Vietnam Wars
Believed that governments could never be trusted

Machine
Was a metaphor for government power
Dallas, got a soft drink machine
o Illusion to W. Burrows The Soft Machine
o There is a loss in soft culture by overwhelming government control (fads, soft freedoms, etc)

Kesey sees the Machine as a cold and calculating government force, represented through government institutions (ex: schools)

Kesey uses the mental hospital as a reflection of government institutions
Individual is more important than the group
We would do everything to develop individuality, so that the freedom of thought will in time become a solution to problems
Kesey sees the government using CONFORMITY as a weapon
