A & P
~ John Updike

Story is from the first person point of view
o Mostly a psychological style (all the other element become secondary to the thought process)
Processing of reasoning steps up when setting takes a back burner
When in this process, symbols become important
 Symbolically
  o His stand for manhood
  o His social stand

 Sammy socially rejects his position
o His position is the working clan (Lengal, Sammys parents, and everyone in the store is part of this class)
He sees down one isle (this is his world)
The story has run on sentences. Sammys thoughts, just rambling. Thoughts that are tied together.
By calling her a queen he separates her from the group
Sheep everybody is not distinguishable, follow the leader
o Watch the till, if mistake they get angry (there power)
 Girls went against the path
Everybodys luck begins to run out
Lengal gives social structure to the story
o Town not decent if not covered up
Working class do everything the same because theyve always done it that way (doesnt make it right)
Sammy defends the girls by quitting rebels against the social structure
