| Standard Format: Personal Response
Before starting your personal (minor) repose, read ALL the information given Minimum of 3 paragraphs: 4-5 First Paragraph Deal with overall message of the author (1-2 sentences) Discuss the title, mention the author (1-2 sentences Discuss the authors purpose (will take up the rest of the paragraph) Make different connections between ideas Second Paragraph A closer look at the content in the context Have at least 3 specific examples that relate to the previously stated purpose Use the tools of English (metaphoretc) o Example: Williams metaphorically/ironically states in his simile Third Paragraph Broadening and deepening of experience Personal relationship to topic Insightful connection to the topic, detailed connection Is there a way that you can explain the broadening of your experience in relation to the theme? You must demonstrate complete understanding for the message in the piece [Broaden and break this up into two paragraphs ] If you write your response as if no one else could have written it, then it is personal enough Use clear examples Use personal perception You can use I but not you Use your VOICE, believe and make-believe o Its ok for you to make up a fictional experience to relate to the piece and topic but please, make it BELIEVABLE. (hehehe, lying is an art isnt it?) o The biggest mistake when establishing VOICE is to try to be funny or clever (what you find funny at the time may not be funny to the sour, grumpy marker who is really tired of marking so many writings full of BS and will not be in a very agreeable mood) o Use formal language o Use appropriate modifiers and change them Example: adjectives, adverbs o DO NOT USE very *Use of Quotes * Memorize 10 major quotes and 10 minor quotes Try not to use block quotes (2+ sentences); better to incorporate quotes into your own language What needs to be kicked OUT of your written language a lot => a great deal, a great many, much I believe, I think, I feel, In my opinion=> duh they know that this is your paper so duh you are the one writing it. They might not take marks off for content but will write marks off for writing style. you => DONT EVER USE THIS: best thing to try to do is write completely in the third person |
