Oded Fehr

bio

Oded Fehr was born to European parents on November 23, 1970 in Tel Aviv, Israel. He was a constantly entertaining child. As he puts it, "I'd watch shows like Seasame Street on television - that's how I learned English - and I would always perform songs for my family." Fehr initially disregarded acting as a carreer. "I was very practical," he explains, reasoning that his nature didn't seem right for the profession.

At age 18, Oded enlisted in the Israeli Navy for a three year tour of duty. While the military may seem like a natural training ground for someone destined to star in big buget action films, Oded did not find much of a connection between the two carreers. "The fighting in the acting world is a lot different from the fighting there. My skin crawls when we get guns on the set because guns for me, and in Israel, are something that is there for killing." Suprisingly enough, Fehr admits to receiving better training for his on screen battles in drama school rather then in the military.

When his National Service duty came to an end, Oded decided to join his father and become a businessman. That jounrey landed the young man in Frankfurt, Germany, where the father-son business was established. While they had a successful partnership, the two parted ways, in terms of the business, two years later. "Though we got on very well, business just didn't do it for me at all." To pass the time, Fehr embarked upon "some silly drama course," which led to his particiapation in a local production of David Mamet's stage play, Sexual Perversity in Chicago.

Oded then made up his mind to become an actor. With his family's support he moved to London, England and was untimately accepted into the none-too-shabby Old Bristol Vic Theater School. For the next three years school was his home. During his stint in the drama school, Oded landed a few signifigant roles. First up Fehr appeared as Don Juan in the stage play Don Juan Comes Back From The War at the Courtyard Theater in London. He also appeared in both The Knock and Killer Net for british television. Up next was a small role as thief number two in Arabian Nights for Hallmark Television. Then a larger role as Cleopatra's guard in Cleopatra, also for Hallmark.

In 1998, Fehr graduated from acting school. A few months later he was cast in the role that would change his life. The Mummy was released in 1999. Audiences worldwide were seeing Oded Fehr, playing Ardeth Bay, for the first time. The movie was a box office success and opened up more oportunitites for Oded.

His next role, as a gigalow, in Duece Bigalow, Male Gigalo was also a success, although a strange one. "A lot of people wondered why I did that because it is a very silly movie, but I enjoyed that it enabled people to see me as something completely different than very dark, very brooding," he says of the film.

After the success of The Mummy and Duece Bigalow, Male Gigalo, Oded traveled to Canada to play a French-Canadian outlaw in Texas Rangers, which has yet to be released. After shooting was completed, Fehr was approached to revive his role as Ardeth Bay in The Mummy Returns, the sequel to the 1999 hit film.

The Mummy Returns was released in the spring of 2001. As Fehr has hoped, his expanded role in the film increased his visability as a versitile artist. The film was a huge box office success and gave Oded more exposure in a few short months than he has had in the past few years combined. He has used his newfound celebrity in positive ways such as hosting a Kids Cancer Connection fund-raiser with the cast of The Mummy Returns.

In the summer of 2001, Oded auditioned for a multiple episode character in a new NBC drama called UC: Undercover. Apparently he impressed the casting director because she soon asked Fehr to replace Grant Show as the series' lead actor. Of course, Oded took this oportunity and now his fans can watch him in action every Sunday night this fall on NBC.

Things look very bright for Oded Fehr's carreer. As for the future, he will "try to pick up the jobs Antonio Banderas turns down."
