Anne Marie laid down on the bed next to JJ and, kissing him lightly on his face, started undoing the buttons on his ill fitting shirt. ``We can't do this ...'' JJ started to say, but Anne Marie pressed her finger against his lips.

• I've always tried to have long nails, right from when I was very young. My mother was against them, saying it would get me in trouble. Only Angels are allowed to have long nails and the DIVINE herself of course.

``It started when I got bored of the Union. I started noticing boys and they interested me more than Union. I got annoyed that all my energy was being sapped out of me by them. ``I noticed the corruption. Why did we have all the fine clothes and good food, while the people outside were starving. And I saw the behaviour of the other Angels. They would go around in gangs, beating up people who didn't fit in, or who looked too old, or any number of arbitrary reasons. I had joined to help people.

``Then I talked with some of the elderly people, mainly prisoners, in private. They told me about how it was before the Glorious Revelation, and how it still is outside of Britain. Where people are free to say what they like, including complaining about the government if they don't like it. And they don't have to have the Union. I realised that my feeling towards boys was completely natural and it was the DIVINE's grip on Britain which had destroyed this order of things.

``And all this time, I wondered what had happened to Julie. I can remember vividly that day three years ago, just after my first Union, when she disappeared. I can still picture knocking on the door. Her mom and dad were in and thought Julie was upstairs in her room. They called for her but there was no reply.

`` `Julie come downstairs. Anne Marie is here.' Her mother hollowed again.

`` `I'll go up.' I said. I went up but there was no sign of her. I remember waiting for a bit. But then I got bored and left. We all assumed that Julie had just slipped out and she would turn up later. But she didn't turn up that evening or the next day. Her parents got more and more anxious. They called her friends and in the evening they went to the police.''

This was especially brave, JJ thought. Go to the police with a missing person story and you're likely to end up disappeared also.

`` `I don't understand it.' Her dad told me after two months. They now suspected she had been taken by the authorities. `But she was never in trouble. We never said or even thought anything bad against our BEAUTIFUL LEADER. Why would they take our daughter?' ''

There was a tear in Anne Marie eye. ``Will you help me do something about this. We can stop it''

JJ protested, ``But we are only two, there's is a whole army and they've got the magic of the DIVINE. What can we hope to achieve. We'll just get ourselves killed.''

``We must try. There's rumours of an underground. We could join them. I can use my inside knowledge to help to find the weaknesses in the regime.''
