3
- Greater expectations
- NEED effective study habits
- Manage your TIME
- Buy a planner, and USE it
4
- Read all the assigned material, maintain situational awareness
- Write in your planner all tests, midterms, essay deadlines, etc.
- Visit people that can help: fellow classmates, big sib, professor, TA,
advisors, RA, SAFE and counselors
- Know the homework
5
- People are different, some take meticulous notes, some take no notes:
FIND THE BALANCE THAT ENHANCES RETENTION
- Get beyond what is being lectured, piece together the bigger picture,
this helps retention
- Every professor sees different material as what’s “important”
6
- SOUND OFF with QUESTIONS. Too shy? Write them down and ask someone
later, preferably the professor right after class or in office hours
7
- Look over notes, previous readings at least ONCE A WEEK. Preferably
after every lecture, but I know you all got video games and AIM
- Clear up academic luggage you don’t understand ASAP
8
- Ideally, have two weeks prior to test for study, but one week will
suffice if you’ve been keeping up with studies anyway
- SHORT, FREQUENT study periods
- Work through technical problems on own, WITHOUT ANY referencing
materials
9
- Have a “I’m gonna kill that little booger” attitude, not a “CRAP, it’s
that ghost from Ring reincarnated on paper” mentality.
- Knowing your stuff builds confidence, but too much studying will make
you feel inadequate, so again, SHORT study periods.
10
- Ideally, plan all four years.
- Map out all major prereqs
- Spread out tests and assignment time to prevent overloading
- Again, keep up with the dates in your planner
11
- Sounds stupid, but PLAN to sleep square hours, eat FULL meals, and get
exercise
- Strong, sound bodies function better under stress=better test taking
ability
- Exercise is good relief from your troubles
12
- Friends: n. Enemy and ally against the greater goal of obtaining an
education
- Have fun with them to release stress, but don’t let that fun time eat up
study time
- Ask (Force) them to study with you
- Use your HSU resources
13
- Know your stuff BEFORE class
- Manage your time
- Set aside time to maintain your body
- Work with friends
- Always study and attend class
- Practice PRACTICE PRACTICE
- Build scholarly DISCIPLINE
