ASCII which stands for American Standard Code of Information Interchange, is just one* of many different character sets. Standard ASCII is a 7 bit character set, what most people come across is Extended ASCII which is an 8 bit character set which starts with standard ASCII and follows up with an extra 128 characters including characters such as copyright symbol, international currency symbol and the list goes on.

* In actual fact there are several versions of ASCII.
