Happy New Year

The holidays have passed quickly by and we begin another calendar year. Although our meeting attendance has been small for far too long, we have had some productive discussion at our last few meetings, and so the members of the board have decided that, for the foreseeable future, as long as O'Connor's allows, we will continue to meet on the first and third Mondays of each month. Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 7 at 7:00 PM

Installation Dinner

Catherine Ilchert was sworn in as Club President on November 16, 2001, at a dinner at Twin Brooks Country Club attended by about 30 Optimists and guests. Bob Duyckinck presented his Board of Directors with gifts in appreciation for a job well done, and honored Joe Higgins as Optimist of the Year. New Jersey District Governor Joe Edwards was on hand to install Catherine, Treasurer Karl Baumle and Secretary Joe Higgins as officers for the 2001-2002 year. We were also honored by the presence of guest Tiby Wotherspoon, who spoke to us briefly about how her optimism has sustained her through nearly 98 years. I received a lovely Thank You note from Tiby:

Dear Optimist Friends, I enjoyed your installation meeting so much and the delicious dinner and my bourbon sour.
I have lived through the "great" depression and six wars. I refused to let the depression upset me, and think that is when my husband called me a "(illegible) Optimist"
I shall wear your colors and pin with great pride.
Please wish everyone a great holiday season and thanks again for a memorable evening.
Sincerely, Tiby Wotherspoon

Upcoming Events

We are trying to set up a "New Members" meeting. If we can get it together, it may be on January 21. If not then, it will be shortly thereafter.

Friday, February 1, 6:00 PM will be the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby. Bob Duyckinck will be there with his automated timing system, and can always use a few extra hands to carry cars back and forth from the finish line to the starting line. It's always a fun, albeit noisy, event.

Youth Club

Governor Joe Edwards' theme for the year is "The Year of the Youth Club." He is encouraging each club in the district to start a youth club. With that goal in mind, President Ilchert has spoken to students at both Valley View and Watchung Hills. We will also be sponsoring some more "Friday Night Hang-outs" at the Watchung Library which proved popular last year.

Winter Social

Although our annual holiday party was a victim of the late start we got this year, we are still hoping to have some sort of social gathering before too long. Anyone with suggestions, or who might be interested in hosting a winter party, please contact Cathy Ilchert or any other members of the board (Karl Baumle, Bob Duyckinck, Joe Higgins).
