This page is dedicated to Peter O'Connor, from County Sligo, Ireland and his descendants. The search continues for information about the family that Peter left behind in Ireland when he came to Canada with his three sons. My uncle, Leo O'Connor, has spent a great deal of time compiling information about our family. Below is an excerpt from his work.

"My Great, Great, Grandfather, Peter O'Connor (b. 1779; d. 1856) emigrated from County Sligo, Ireland to Canada in the year 1821. It is thought he worked on the Welland Canal and did other odd jobs until the year 1833 when he first began to farm in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. His wife died in Ireland prior to 1821 and it is uncertain whether Peter came out to Canada by himself or with one or more of his sons. The names of his 3 sons in chronological order are: Michael (b.1808; d.1898) Patrick (b. 1812 d.1889) and Bartholomew (b. 1814; d. 1890)

Determining information in Ireland about the ancestors is very difficult for two reasons. First, most of the civil vital records in Ireland were destroyed in a fire in the Dublin Records office in 1922 during the civil strife of that time. Secondly, due to the harsh penal laws of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, most Catholic church records, (baptisms, marriages, etc.) were either intentionally destroyed or never recorded in the first place.

Peter's wife's maiden name is as of now, unknown but her first name is assumed to have been Sarah, based on the fact that all three of her sons named one of their daughters "Sarah". And for two of her sons, it was their first daughter."

1871 ONTARIO CENSUS

A search of the 1871 Ontario Census Index for Wentworth County shows a "BARTLAY OCONOR 54" and a "MICHAEL OCONOR 63". And for Norfolk County a "PATRICK CONNOR 60" is listed.

Although the names and ages are not exact, we don't really doubt these are our O'Connor ancestors, Bartholomew 57, Michael 63 and Patrick 59. Take a look for some of your ancestors!

An important part of this O'Connor Family, from the time that Peter arrived in the Dundas area, is St. Augustines Church. It is one of the oldest Roman Catholic Churches in the area. Many of my family still attend this church today. And although I live in another parish, I was married at St. Augustine's and both my children were baptized there. Visit the St. Augustine's Church website. There is alot of history to be found there!
