Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day,
Little Brenda
Wants to play
Rain, rain,
Go away
The color of the water changed from dark tannin tea to stirred up mud. The wind picked up and made me start hunting rain gear.
I could hear it rustle the tops of the trees,
see it send leaves down
and ripples across the water,
and feel it raise goosbumps on my arms.
I wrestled the jacket on while floating but had to pull up on shore to get the pants on. I even put the rain cover on the kayak.
The rain patted my hat and tapped the surface of the water. A haze grew so that the trees ahead were shades of blue instead of green. I could just see my breath. A hot cup of coffee or some vegetable soup would be great. I called mom to see what she was cooking for dinner and tell her not to worry about me in the rain. I'm ok.
All zipped up and snug in my little home on the river, I grinned from ear to ear, and fell into a rhythmic gentle stroke.
The rain eased but the chilled air stayed with me. I was able to open the seal on my litle home and let some air inside while resting my feet on top of the boat and leaning back. I let the river take me. The sound of water making its way through branches that had fallen in the river. The birds singing all around me lulled me to sleep. Several times I caught myself right before drifting off. The river was that relaxing for me.
BACK
So that no one thinks the river is easy let me also tell you that twice I was almost flipped over and dragged under by the current trying to get around downed trees. Don't take the river lightly. I don't.
