Melinda A. Silverman, Ph.D.: Dr. Silverman is a licensed psychologist in the state of California. She works with a wide range of patients, including children, adolescents, adults and the elderly who are having difficulty functioning and feeling good about their lives. A variety of techniques and theoretical approaches are utilized in therapy, including attachment, developmental, family systems, cognitive-behavioral, and object-relations theories. Dr. Silverman carefully matches the treatment to the person and problems at hand. Dr. Silverman has several areas of expertise. One that is frequently sought after is her work with children and adolescents who are experiencing depression, anxiety, weight problems or other issues that impact their self-esteem. Dr. Silverman treats both the individual and the family. She aids in understanding the causes of the symptoms and helps the family and the individual in formulating ways of interacting that will not only reduce the symptoms, but ultimately maintain more positive and enjoyable family relationships. Dr. Silverman is also accomplished in the assessment and treatment of children with behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Dr. Silverman has additional expertise working with adults who are coping with abusive or otherwise difficult family histories. A particular, and unusual, specialty of hers includes assisting children, adolescents, and adults who are coping with critical/chronic illness or physical pain and bereavement counseling. Dr. Silverman
received her undergraduate education at State University New York, at Purchase.
Her graduate education was received at the University of Southern California,
where she completed both her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Counseling
Psychology. Dr. Silverman completed an internship at Kaiser Permanente,
Santa Ana, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric health-psychology
at Children's Hospital of Orange County. She is a member of the American
Psychological Association.
