HP and Compaq merger has gone through, and the merged company will start trading this Monday. There is a new game in development, Tron 2.0. A game based on the 1982 movie Tron. There are some screen shots at the site, which seem really cool (and actually resemble the movie quite well). Then again, around that time, we'll probably still be playing DOOM III to notice anything else :-) There is an interesting article about the next great leap in technology. The next revolution will be about things connecting with things. Kind of scary if you ask me. Just think: everything will be tracked. The technology that was once showed off on 'Beyond 2000' show on Discovery channel has been finally released. The sea/air transport vessel is a boat, that when moving very fast, can lift itself out of water. The speed is obviously faster than any boat, and it is a lot more economic than an airplane. Someone has obviously seen too many alien movies: Mars explorers must weigh contamination risks... Well this is fun. How are we supposed to find life on the red planet if we will specifically land in places where there is least chance of us encountering it??? Reading the title first, I thought they'd talk about how we shouldn't contaminate mars with our own life from earth. For example, lets say that rover had some dead skin from some scientist, and in 20 years, some other rover may just detect that skin as biological past-life thing (and we'd assume there was life on mars, even though we brought it there). Oh, well. IMHO, the entire goal of going there is to look for life, not to try to avoid it. In tech news, Adobe won 2.8 million from Macromedia for some patent violations. I have no love for Macromedia, but even less love for Adobe. I mean, come on, a patent suit??? Is this how the tech industry works now a days? It's not even a worthy patent IMHO! I'm still amazed how fopen() is still a valid system call, as it allows you to open files and circumvent all sorts of security and copyright stuff. Someone should consider invoking DMCA or something to make the use of fopen() (and other file manipulation methods) illegal. Hmm... or from another perspective, how about getting a patent on fopen(), then all software that uses it will have to pay you a royalty (or you'll sue them for 2.8 million). There are a bunch of SoF2 movies you can view at GameSpot. The single player aspect of the game seems interesting (kind of like Wolfeinstain in a different setting). Tip: Definitely check out Movie 1. It shows off 32 different hit locations on a player model (pretty impressive). Watch the interview movie as well (as it shows some of the features, etc., really impressive). Even though I hated the multiplayer test they've released, I'm probably going to buy the single player game (as it seems really well made). Hmm... By implanting electrodes in rats' brains, scientists have created remote-controlled rodents they can command... Am I the only one who sees anything wrong with this? For one, torturing animals (even if it is for science) (and even if it is just rats) is wrong! Second, as the article said, what happens when we start doing this to dogs, cats, and maybe later humans? I'm sure some mad scientist (Dr.Evil?) has probably already started working on a way to control humans via this approach. In other news, it appears there are some sites who don't want to be linked to: Site Barks About Deep Link. What is wrong with these people? If they don't want any deep linking, they shouldn't allow such access in the first place! It's not too difficult to setup a session every time a person enters the main page, and only allow people with such valid session to view any other documents (and redirect them to the main page if such a session doesn't exist). It's not like it's a major issue. No, for them, it's obviously easier to complain, startup court proceedings, etc., make a fool of them selves, and not try to find a constructive solution to their problem. Not to mention that they should also go after Google and the like, since those do deep linking as a matter of their normal operations. Oh, well. Just proves that the net is full of nutcases.
