Tammy Tillotson

In 1978, Tammy Tell Me True was one of my mother's favorite television programs. The main character, Tammy, was a naïve, stubborn, and curious young lady who lived, somewhat unconventionally, on a riverboat.

Tammy was often misunderstood due to her candidness of expression, pursuit of somewhat whimsical desires, and relentless search for understanding. Tammy always had the greatest of intentions, though she had a funny way of finding herself in the middle of everything imaginable.

For all of these reasons, and the fact that the television theme song "Tammy's in Love" contributed to maternal crying outbursts, my mother decided the name would be perfect for her middle daughter.

Tammy means "perfection," and in all things dreamed and hoped for, perfection seems to be the ideal that people strive to reach, regardless of how unattainable and unpredictable the notion. I have found that the only way to find perfection is to accept and love all imperfection.

The ocean is one of my favorite allegories, as the duality of its nature is much like my own, and much like life in general. The serendipity in its high and low tides consistently yields a conglomeration of events that wash both lost and found sediments upon distant shores. A tiny grain of sand and a roughly broken seashell possess porous secrets from depths that people may never be able to truly understand.

My hope is that the ocean floor will explore a few such sediments.
