Compulsions: Compulsions are things that people feel they have to do, even when they do not want to. They are usually performed in order to "put right" the obsession. Sometimes the compulsions are irrational and have nothing to do with the obsession what so ever. For example: Somebody who has a fear of germs may feel the need to count up to 20, 20 times in order to stop worrying or not contaminate themselves. They clearly have no link to eachother. But some people perform more rational compulsions. For example: Somebody else with the fear of germs may wash their hands for an hour to make sure that they are not contaminated. Which is clearly linked to the obsession. Most people with OCD know that their compulsions are unreasonable but can not stop doing them as anxiety takes over.
Here are afew examples of common compulsions:

Excessive or ritualized washing, cleaning, or grooming
Checking light switches, stoves, windows, door locks, etc, many times
Counting; Arranging, evening up, etc
Repeating routine actions
