| I was only 16 at the time but both my boyfriend (he was 19 or so at the time) and i had been working to support ourselves and had our own place and felt ready for a baby. Even though we felt ready it was a real shock. We were both happy about the pregnancy and looking forward to a child of our own. things seemed to be going great with the pregnancy. I had no morning sickness or breast tenderness or any of the usual symptons. I thought I was looking forward to an easy pregnancy. When I was 4 months pregnanct i was sent for a routine ultrasound after an irregular rythm was detected, irregular heartbeats are very common in a fetus and not really a cause for concern but my Doc thought he'd get me checked just in case. The evening after I had my ultrasound done my doc showed up at my door ...i knew it couldn't be good news. It turned out the ultrasound showed only half of the heart had developed properly and he wanted me to go for a lvl 2 ultrasound. We went for several ultrasounds and they all showed the same problem, Hypo-plastic left ventrical heart syndrome. A very rare heart condition which is usually not detected until after the birth of a baby. no known cause for this condition. Both Jason and I were distraught at how low our chances were with this baby. We were told his expected life span was 4 days and asked how would i like to proceed with the pregnancy. Naturally I fought to keep the baby and give him what chances I could. The doctors thought i made the right choise in doing so and from that point on i had my regular visits like any other pregnant mother. They did make special arrangments for me to deliver my son in Toronto at Mnt. Sinai hospital since it is directly across from sick children's hospital. But I am getting ahead of myself. When I was 6 mths pregnant my boyfriend and I had moved into my mother's house and rented a room from them. I woke one morning with severe cramps shooting up my back but none was in my front so i didn't think I was in labor. When my mother awoke she asked why i was sitting on a pile of cushions and up so early so I told her...well she flipped out screaming that I was in labor, so off to the hospital the whole house of people went. After many internal exams and several stressful hours later they decided to send me for another ultrasound to see why my labor wasn't progressing. Turned out I wasn't in labor at all but had a very large and nasty kidney stone causing all the pain and a bit of bleeding. After a short stay in hosputal to make sure I passed the stone without any problems I was released but they wanted me to find somewhere to stay closer to Toronto (45 mins from where i am now on a low traffic day). The closest place I could stay was in Brampton Ontario with an aunt of mine. I lived with her and her son for the remaining 3 mths with my boyfriend only able to come up on weekends because of work. In my last month of pregnancy he managed to get his vacation from work and joined me at my aunt's. Around 3 in the morning of the day i was due i started getting cramps which gradually increased to the point I knew I was in labor around 5:30 in the morning I woke up my boyfriend explaining i was in labor (his response is still in my head to this day "what makes you think that" he says..s I said something along the lines of "violent pains and b*tchy" which got the point across) Well my Aunt started running around like a madwoman (she is only 4 or 5 years older than me btw) She phoned her mother who was going to drive me to the hospital and shortly after her mother arrived and bustled us off...down the Q.E.W (nightmare traffic and rushhour was starting) well traffic came to a standstill and there we sat. It took us a good hour to get to the hospital from my aunt's. To my surprise the nurses and dr's didn't seem concerned about me at all even though they knew my baby needed to be taken as soon as he was born to sick childrens hospital. They determined i wasn't far enough along to admit yet so they made me wander around the Eaton's Centre (was only half block away) Well i wandered the halls of that mall for the rest of the day on and off. My labor pains were feeling very strong but they still wouldn't accept me. Eventually they made me travel back to Brampton for the night. This was repeated for 3 DAYS!!! I was in labor for 3 days and they wouldn't accept me.Finnally i got very angry and refused to leave. i was sitting on a birthing bed arguing with a nurse (several choise words on my behalf) when my water broke. I remember looking at the nurse and laughing..not a hope they could make me leave again. ---> Continued | ||||||||||||
