Cute Guy in a Cape - A Shrine to Live Action Tuxedo Mask

Important! I have decided that, for now at least, I will not update this page. I may change my mind eventually and make this into a more comprehensive site. Until then, you can find lots information about Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, including Tuxedo Mask, at my PGSM site, Juuban District. Be sure to read the episode pages for info about Tux-related plot developments!

Welcome to Cute Guy in a Cape, a shrine to Tuxedo Mask (a.k.a. Mamoru Chiba) from the new live action series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

I've always been a Tux fan, but (mullet aside) this incarnation of him seems to be cooler than either the anime or manga... not to mention that he's played by the gorgeous Jyoji Shibue. As a result, I decided to make a site about him, which is also the first ever character-specific PGSM site. Read on to find out more about the cute yet strangely-dressed Tuxedo Mask...

This shrine is by Philip Reuben, a.k.a. Obsessive Touga Fan.

(Coming soon: Screencaps, separated by episode)

Tuxedo Mask / Mamoru Chiba

About:

In the first episode, Mamoru is backstage at a jewellery fashion show when he first meets Usagi (that's Sailor Moon, the heroine of the series, for anyone who doesn't know). He's rude to her, insulting her looks (he says no one could ever think she was one of the models in the fashion show), and instantly the two dislike each other - but how long will it stay that way?

Mamoru is looking for the legendary Silver Crystal. Because of this, he has become a jewellery thief in order to find it. His secret identity is Tuxedo Mask, who (as I'm sure you are aware) wears a tuxedo and a mask. Tuxedo Mask's nemesis is Sailor V, a heroine who has been reported in the news as stopping criminals. However, Tuxedo Mask also saves Sailor Moon from an attack in the first episode - and not knowing that he's really Mamoru (or that he's a thief), she thinks he's kind of cool...

Differences from the anime and manga:
  • The biggest change from both the anime and manga is that Tuxedo Mask now steals jewellery in order to find the Silver Crystal. Most people agree that this is quite a clever change, and the resulting rivalry with Sailor V will hopefully lead to some interesting conflict later on.
  • In the manga, Mamoru knows he is Tuxedo Mask from the start of the series. In the anime this is not the case - he transforms without knowing about it, and only discovers his alter ego later on. The live action series follows the manga, and has Mamoru knowing all along.
  • In the anime he throws roses as his signature attack, but in the manga he never throws a single rose. So far there seem to be no roses in the live action series, and I imagine if they were going to include them they would have done straight away.
  • And of course, he now has a mullet ^^;
Things that are not yet clear:
  • Why is he searching for the Silver Crystal? It may or may not turn out to be the same reason as in the anime and manga.
  • Just generally, lots of details about Mamoru's past have yet to be filled in, including the main plot stuff about Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. How all of this will be handled in the live action series is unknown, and we'll probably have to wait a while to find out.
  • Mamoru is in high school in the manga and college in the anime. It is not yet clear how old he is in the live action series, although the actor playing him is 20, which may be an indication.
  • In the anime, Mamoru transforms into Tuxedo Mask using a magic rose (we are only shown this a handful of times throughout the series). In the manga, the Tuxedo Mask costume is just that - a costume. He puts it on and takes it off like any other clothes. It seems much more likely to me that the live action series follows the manga on this point, but as of yet there's no concrete evidence.
  • Finally, I'm sure there will be plenty more surprises along the way...
More information will be added as each episode airs!
