Thoughts on the Mystery of the Crimson Cowl
During the time that the Crimson Cowl's true identity had been unrevealed, I remember how big of a guessing game it was for me. I love these kinds of mysteries...the "guess-who-the-secretive-villain-is" mysteries. Bloodaxe and the original Hobgoblin mysteries are other examples.

Most people assumed that the Crimson Cowl was Baroness Zemo. Dallas Riordan was another suspect. Oddly enough, Justine used Dallas as a decoy to fool the Thunderbolts into thinking that they had captured the real Cowl. I must admit that Dallas had been my first choice as a suspect up until the fake-out revelation in
Thunderbolts#25. When the T-Bolts found the Cowl and unmasked her as Dallas, I knew then that Dallas wasn't the Cowl. It was more than obvious to me that Dallas had been a plant. On another odd note, I had no idea at the time that Dallas was actually Citizen V (another mystery storyline), even though the clues were right there in front of my face.

Anyway, over time, I began to strongly believe that the Crimson Cowl was actually
Silver Sable, who had gone bad for some reason. A lot of clues pointed me in her direction. In Thunderbolts #40, when the T-Bolts went to Symkaria, Silver's home country, Silver was nowhere to be found! There were a few other clues as well.  I thought that Silver Sable was the Crimson Cowl right up to the big revelation issue, Thunderbolts#67, when Hawkeye tracked the Cowl to Symkaria! Then, lo and behold, the Crimson Cowl turned out to be Justine Hammer, daughter of long-time Marvel Universe villain, Justin Hammer! Excellent! I liked the idea that the Cowl was a new creation...that she was someone who had never been seen before in a Marvel Comic...and I liked it because of the fact that, although Justine was new, she was still connected to a longstanding Marvel Universe villain!
The Untold Truth About The Crimson Cowl
It must be noted that the Crimson Cowl was originally supposed to be someone other than Justine Hammer. Justine was Fabian's choice and creation. Kurt Busiek, the original writer of the Thunderbolts, had actually intended on the Cowl being Alice Nugent, head of Nugent Technologies and former lab assistant of Hank Pym. Alice made her first appearance in Iron Man#194, although it appears that she made her first unconfirmed appearance in Avengers#164, where a woman named Alice is seen assisting Hank in the examination of Wonder Man. Busiek was going to introduce Alice in later issues of the Thunderbolts and set her up for a while before he made the big revelation that she was the Cowl. He even went so far as to place Alice in the pages of Avengers Vol.3#19-20. It was going to turn out that Alice was the one who reported to Ultron about Hank Pym's activities at Nugent Tech.

Personally, I like Fabian's choice much better. I like Justine Hammer, and I hope that she will return someday, maybe even in the pages of
New Thunderbolts.
