BASIC PROGRAMMING
ABANDONWARE GAMES
DESKTOP ENHANCEMENTS

 BASIC Programming

Way back in high school computer class, we took up BASIC programming. Here's some of the stuff I came up with. All of it's really small, from a few hundred bytes to maybe 30KB, so it should be a fast download.

(Note: You need a BASIC interpreter to run these files. Here's a copy of GWBASIC, if you don't have MS-BASICA with you.)

"Mang"
A very simple program which asks for your name, then everytime you hit a key, prints it on screen with the word "Mang" and an exclamation point. We did this to annoy one of our classmates, Arnold, who was sometimes called "Mang Arnie." ("Mang" is a Filipino vernacular salutation commonly used when referring to middle-aged to elderly men of the lower income bracket.)

"Hyped"
I came up with this audio-visual sound effects routine on a whim.
BASIC prints different random numbers on screen while playing a note at the frequency of each number. The process is repeated at machinegun pace, so you get a sound akin to a computer from a 1950's science fiction.

"Computer Conversation Program"
Not quite Dr. Sbaitso. Rather than AI (artificial intelligence), it's AS (artificial stupidity). You type to the computer, and it responds with a random phrase. Does it depend on what you say? I don't know
. I just know it's really fun. You can also save conversations and retrieve them later on.

"Escape from the Dungeon"
This was our final project in BASIC class. Our group made a text adventure fantasy game, complete with magic, ogre battles, and fantasy-RPG clichés. It's pretty much a roll-your-attributes-and-choose-the-number-of-your-choice adventure, with a randomly generated ogre fight subroutine every now and then. (Note: This one's in a WINZIP archive.)

 Abandonware Games

Long before Tomb Raider, Quake, or even Doom and Wolfenstein, when your dream PC had a CGA monitor, 640K of RAM, and a 20 MB hard disk, these were the games we played.

(Note: All games are in ZIP files. These games are so old that their makers have forgotten about them, hence the term "abandonware," but if anyone's legal department has a problem with my posting them here, email me immediately and I'll remove the offending article.)

Pong
A more-or-less faithful remake of the classic arcade game. I was too young to remember the original Pong, but I still enjoy playing it today.
Alley Cat
One of the first arcade games for the IBM PC, where you play an alley cat wreaking havoc and mating with female housecats, while avoiding dogs and other hazards.
Sleuth
The classic whodunit ASCII art game, where the detective must interrogate the guests and examine the clues to find the murderer...before he is murdered himself.
Rogue
Another ASCII game, one of the most popular fantasy RPG's ever made, where you must escape a Dungeon, fighting monsters and casting spells on the way.
King's Quest I
VGA remake of Sierra's classic command line adventure. Sir Graham of Daventry must quest for three treasures to become king. A map is included.
Sword of the Samurai
An excellent Japanese historical RPG, introduced to me by Gino Bagsit, a close friend and Japano-phile from high school. I'm still addicted to this game today.

 Desktop Enhancements

These are just samples. A full collection of original wallpapers, Windows logo screens, and icons can be found at my graphic design site, ( simplesight ) graphics. These are all WINZIP'd.

Tiffany Tiles
While this wallpaper has nothing to do with Tiffany, she was sitting beside me when I made them on Photoshop, and she liked them so much that I named the pattern after her.
Welcome Window logo screens
Refined version of the beveled window set. These were loosely based on the MacOS startup. (The little computer icon should look familiar.)
Floating Spheres
One of my first and still one of my best wallpapers, with gradient spheres floating over a teal rocky surface. Inspired by an old MacOS desktop pattern.
Old Manila logo screens
I found some scanned photos of 1950s Manila, and I thought they'd make a cool nostalgic logo set. My name has been subtly layered into two of the photos.
