MATH WIZARDS PULL OFF 60-SECOND CHALLENGE - As reported in the Sun (a local newspaper), pg.17

KEPALA BATAS: Imagine having to answer complex mathematical questions in 60 seconds! This was the daunting task nine university and secondary school participants had to go through in the Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) Investment Quiz Competition on Wednesday.

Held in conjunction with Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia at Dewan Milenium here, the students were tested on their knowledge of the economy, commerce, unit trusts and facts on PNB. University Utara Malaysia final-year students Foo Zoon Hin, 23, Mohd Hanafiah Mohd Ibrahim, 23, Karen Chuah Mei Jiaun, 23 and Wong Wei Peng, 25, emerged as victors in the university category.

We never expected to win as the questions were rather difficult and we were given only 60 seconds to answer it felt like an examination there is never enough time, said Foo who headed the team.

They beat Universiti sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) to win RM5000, the group chief executive challenge trophy and other prizes. Runner-up, USM, and second runner-up, UIA, walked away with RM3000 and RM2000, trophies and gifts, respectively.

Foo said that they will invest the money in a unit trust scheme after donating some to the Faculty of Finance and Banking Club. Secondary school students Siti Nurazimah Jamaluddin, Hafiz Mohd Salleh, Norhidayah Basri, Yasmin Abdullah, all 17 from SMK Agama Nibong Tebal grabbed the first prize in the secondary schools category, beating SMK Dato Sheikh Ahmad, Perlis and SMK Agama Pedas, Negri Sembilan.

They won RM3000, a PNB group chief executive challenge trophy and accompanying prizes. PNB group president and CEO Datuk Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman, who presented the prizes, said that PNB will increase the number of Amanah Saham Didik units from 500 million to 700 million. There has been an increased demand for it since its launch in April 20, 2001, he said.
