| SURF ADVENTURES Panaitan Island - West Java |
![]() |
Pay for 8 full days of surfing, guests arrive at Jakarta Airport and get transferred to the boat and we sail that night. Then surf 8 full days returning at sunset on the second last day of scheduled trip, arriving back in port early morning of the last day and guests are transferred to airport by midday. Trips include all meals, soft drinks and transfers to/from Jakarta Airport. Alcohol is BYO but we have beer on board at cost price. Panaitan Island is part of the Ujung Kulon National Park located on the south western tip of Java, Indonesia. The island is rich in surf and hosts several waves including the perfect left-hand point break One Palm. All levels of surfing are catered for depending on wind and tidal conditions from thick, fast, hollow rights to long, playful lefts. The National Park is one of two World Heritage sites located in Indonesia (the other is in Komodo) and is known for its unspoilt natural beauty along with great fishing, diving, hiking & wildlife. Also nearby is the famous active volcano Krakatau which is well worth a visit if time permits. The first fine break you might see as you approach south Panaitan's surfing bay is a legendary left point break known the world over as One Palm Point. This point break, marked by a single sentinel palm, is one of Indonesia's lefthand wonders. Waves here peel perfectly from outside to inside, barrelling the whole way over a shallow bottom that inspires paranoia but creates record-time tube rides. Indeed, this is not a place for timid or inexperienced waveriders. One Palm Point works best on a good-sized swell, a southeasterly and offshore wind, and at a more medium than low tide. It is ridiculously shallow here, so wear any protective gear you can find. Weary of long and lefthand tube rides? Then head for the opposite side of this three-kilometer wide bay where you will find both a big bombora right on the bay's outside arc-headland, plus, just inside the bay's entrance, a right hand point break, Panaitan Rights, that is not as reckless as the left at One Palm Point, but sometimes perfect. Both places experience drastic tide changes, so check them out at different tides. Outside Panaitan are numerous bombie-type cloudbreaks that rise, crash and seem to disappear. They are spooky, but look around and you might just spot a well-shaped peak. Just as fun and ridable in this deep claw of a bay are a series of inner-harbor breaks which are collectively referred to as Inside Panaitan. Some of these spots, especially those to the inside-centre of the bay, are simply soft, fun and relaxing, but one particular righthander located deep inside and on the western, or portside, of the bay can be very good and picks up nicely amplified southerly swells of decent size. Prevailing winds are bounced around and blow offshore here, so when Outside Panaitan is blown out, this Inside Panaitan playground can be perfect. You will need to arrive in Jakarta airport on the morning / midday of the first day of the scheduled charter and you will be picked up and transferred by road to the boat. On the last day of the scheduled charter you will be dropped off at Jakarta airport by midday for your flight out that afternoon. Bring sunscreen, hats & rash shirts for protection from the sun. There is malaria in this region of Indonesia however it is very rare that mosquitos get out to the boat. We take every precaution to ensure there are no mosquitos onboard. Whether or not you take anti-malarial drugs is up to the individual. Consult your doctor, listen to their advice, weigh up the pros & cons & then make your own decision. Bring a good range of surfboard lengths. A 7'6" should be the biggest board you will need. Stronger glass jobs can help as these waves can break boards. A small fibreglass repair kit is a good idea for dings as well as resin that cures in sunlight (like Solarez etc.) Sandals or reef boots are normally good enough for beach walks / trekking.
