ABSTRACT

There are many reasons why it is important to be able to monitor the performance of a cell or packet based network at a cell or packet level. These include support for both network operator staff and users and will also include activities such as identification of high loading areas of the network and the indication of the current delay over a section of the network

This paper describes an architecture which supports the monitoring of such a network in a distributed and object oriented manner. The architecture is flexible in that additional areas of a network may be monitored by the simple addition of extra data gathering objects. Control of the entire system is centralised, allowing considerable automation of the system due to the system-wide knowledge of a Director object located within a Control Station.
