| My late father always used to remind us to inculcate in our daily life the Sufi philosophy which goes like this: 'Eat less, talk less and sleep less'. I could never really understand the deeper significance of that saying all through my growing years. Now when I look back at how my late father led his life, I suddenly fully comprehend the meaning and the extent of application of that saying to our everyday life. Eat Less: When we talk of health, we certainly do not ever talk of overeating or hogging as they say. We always speak of controlled diets and weight watching. The one fact that all the advanced nations of the world put their complete trust in, is physical fitness. The role of a watchful diet intake cannot be undermined in the achievement of a physically fit persona. Other than the benefits of physical fitness, we have noticed time and again how excessive food intake can slow down our body's metabolism and tends to generate uneasiness and laziness in mind and body. Even our thoughts are kinda reclined and not-so-benevolent. That is extremely damaging to us and those around us. Well, that's the core of it all: Excessive food intake not only causes physical ailments but most importantly, it takes away our alertness to opportunity; our keenness of thought; our ability to maintain good-relationships with those around us. Our sensibility to see things in the right light. All this can generate long term and/or irrevocable loss in our lives. Talk Less: The major cause of most break-ups is usually an unkind word or an unmindful joke that one had uttered without much thought and on the spur of the moment which we regret through the rest of our lives. What is it that would have helped avoid such a major loss due to a thoughtless comment. Well, it's the ability to talk less and listen more to those around us. This ability when developed can provide us a Midas touch towards improving our personal and professional interactions each day. Allah has given us one mouth and two ears so that we verily use our ears twice as much as our mouths. Therefore, the most important point to remember is that each time we talk, we are basically disseminating the knowledge or communicating the thoughts 'already stored' in our minds and not 'adding' to them. When we are silent, our minds end-up activating the deeper mind processes which 'absorb' information and knowledge thereby taking us to a higher level. Therefore, we gain out of silence and lose out of loose talk. I think that's the reason why silence is called 'golden'. Sleep Less: When we over-sleep and rise very late, like we normally do on week-end mornings, we end-up feeling groggy and dull and listless. The rest of the afternoon is spent trying to return to 'normal mode'. I also know some people who have little to do through the day and toss & turn in bed all night looking for sleep which does not happen. While those who work long hours fall asleep immediately upon hitting the bed and get sound plus quality sleep. If we look at the lives of well known personalities through the ages, be it a president or a prophet, we find how they spent longer hours working and spent very little time 'sleeping'. It is said that four to five hours of sleep is sufficient for us all. In fact, Islam teaches us that: 'Rising late severely affects our Rizkh'. While our good judgement also echoes the same sentiment: 'the early bird catches the worm'. Above are some pointers which take us in the right direction; i.e. in the direction of success and achievement in whatever we take up. All the best. Bye for now. |
