Donald Rumsfeld decides the reason that no 'weapons
of mass destruction' (other than the US's very own uranium tipped nuclear
rounds) have been found in Iraq to date is that they have been 'smuggled to
Syria'. Film buffs will recognise this as a Hitchcockian device, an initial
diversionary plot ruse which may not lead anywhere but which sows doubt and
'gets the pot boiling'. The notion that Iraq, if it had chemical or biological
weapons, somehow found a willing home for them in Syria is of course laughable.
