Pochuck Quagmire walk
Finding the Quagmire
There was a board on the hill behind where I parked, so I climbed up and looked it over. There was not a lot of information concerning what I was looking for. Walking east from the board would take me up hill. That didn't seem like the way to a swamp.

Looking across the road I could see a cow pasture and a broad expanse of valley. This seemed a more likely direction so off I went.

Halfway across the pasture I encountered a walkway to keep my feet drive. I hopped on and strode onward. At the end of the walkway I encountered a small pool of water. Looking up I spied a wooden structure similar to the first one that took me into the pasture.

Climbing over, I discovered a railway and saw another ladder on the other side. Ahead was another pasture and a tree line.

Soon I was wandering the woods, following little white splashes on the sides of trees. Soon I encountered another field and then a creek with a small bridge made of heay timbers.

Why am I doing this? As a boy I spent years wandering the woods around my home in western New York. I'd also been to the Algonquin park on a portage as a small boy with very little in the way of trail markers, but we did have an Indian guide.

I crossed the bridge and over the next tree covered rise I came across another disused field. This contained a number of stone piles, clearly arranged to some unknown purpose.
Bush with berries along the way...
Slow water under bridge.
