Beth Anderson, Women's Novice Head Coach
Beth
started her rowing career as a junior with Pacific Rowing Club and Oakland Strokes. She
rowed for four years on the UCLA crew. After college, she began coaching at Pacific RC
(San Francisco) and then for Purdue University from 1989-91. Beth then moved on to coach
U.C. Davis from 1991-93. During her post college career, Beth was an assistant coach with
the U.S. Junior Men's team prior to and at the 1989 World Junior Championships in Szeged,
Hungary. She was the manager for the U.S. Junior Women's team at the 1993 World
Championships near Oslo, Norway. Beth has been an elected member of the U.S. Rowing's
Board of Directors for the past four years, and prior to that was a four-year member of
U.S. Rowing's Junior Men's Committee. Beth and her husband, John, have four children.
Derek Byrnes, Women's Varsity Coach
Derek
began his coaching career as the University of California, Berkeley Assistant Women's
Varsity coach. He was most recently the Women's Varsity coach at St. Ignatious High School
where the varsity and lightweight crews consistently qualified for the National
Championships. Derek enjoys coaching so much he recently made a drastic career change
which enables him to spend afternoons on the water....coaching. Derek works at the Pacific
Stock Exchange on the Options Floor as a Market Maker, and he and his wife live in
Berkeley.
Dana Hooper, Men's Varsity Coach
Dana
rowed for the Oakland Strokes for three years while attending CPS High School. He went to
Cornell and rowed there through 1997 when he received his B.S. in civil engineering and a
Masters Degree in structural engineering. He returned to the Bay Area in the fall of 1998
and started coaching with the Oakland Strokes as the Men's Varsity Assistant Coach. This
year Dana will be the Men's varsity Coach. Dana is currently working as a structural
engineer in San Francisco.
Alex Thomas, Men's Novice Coach
Alex was last years assistant novice coach, and is excited about the upcoming
season, his second year coaching. Alex graduated from Yale University in 2001,
where he rowed on the lightweight crew and majored in economics. During his time
at Yale, Alex medalled at the Head of the Charles, won Eastern Sprints, and
rowed at Henley. Alex graduated from Piedmont High School in 1997, after rowing
for the Strokes for three years. His senior year he was bow seat of the Men�s
Varsity eight that took 5th at nationals. Aside from coaching, his
"other" job is at the Pacific Exchange, where he will soon trade
options
Janine Moreno, Men's Teams Assistant Coach
Janine's
competitive rowing career started at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She
rowed there for four years, and during her senior year she studied abroad in Buenos Aires,
Argentina where she trained and rowed with the Argentine National Team. In 1999 she
graduated from UNC with a B.A. in Biology and Psychology.
Janine began coaching two years ago at the University of Colorado at Boulder for the
Women's Novice Crew. She is currently a science teacher at Helms Middle School in San
Pablo.
Elizabeth Anglin, Women's Varsity Assistant Coach
Liz
rowed for the Oakland Strokes during her junior and senior years at Miramonte High School
then rowed at Cal. Liz will graduate from Cal in May with a double major in history and
Spanish. She wants to either attend a culinary academy or work as an interpreter in the
foreign service. Liz resides in Berkeley, although home is Australia, where her family
currently lives.
Amanda Herbert, Women's Novice Assistant
Coach
Amanda
is a graduate of the University of Washington, where she received degrees with distinction
in History & German Literature. She is currently working as a research assistant at
the University of California, Berkeley, and plans on pursuing a graduate degree in history
sometime in the future. Amanda was a coxswain for both the Oakland Strokes and at the
University of Washington. She has coached novice rowers at the Lake Merritt Rowing Club
and assisted with the Strokes Men's varsity team.
