INTRODUCTION |
| The Prophet?s Mosque in Medina, is the second holiest Islamic site after the Kaaba in Mecca. The dome on it indicates where Prophet Muhammed?s house stood, and where his is buried. |
| Back when Medina was called Yathrib, there were three groups of people : the Jews, and two feuding Arab tribes. The Jews were followers of Prophet Moses, but the Arab tribes still worshipped idols. These two tribes fought always, until in one battle they almost destroyed each other; they needed a leader to help make peace between them. A few people from one tribe went to Mecca for pilgrimage, and there they met the Prophet Muhammed. Having heard about him from the Jews back home, they listened to his calling everyone to Islam and to the worship of one God. They decided to follow him, and told him about the fighting in Yathrib. When they returned home, they told their people that a new Prophet had come. In the following couple of years, more people wanted to meet the Prophet and pledge their allegiance, not just to the Prophet and the worship of one God, but also to the defense of Islam against any enemies. The new Muslims of Yathrib promised to do so. |
| In the meantime, in Mecca the Muslims were being persecuted and tortured because of their belief in Allah and not the idols that the Unbelievers worshipped. It was bad time for them, and so the Prophet ordered his people to move to Yathrib where they could find refuge. Secretly, alone, or in small groups, the people began to leave; the Prophet and his friend Abu Bakr were the last to leave. The people of Yathrib were excited when they heard that the Prophet was coming, all the city turned up to meet him. Everyone wanted to be his host and they all invited him to their homes, but the Prophet said ?The camel is guided by God, so let her carry me to the place that she is guided to.? The camel stopped in an open space away from the houses and knelt down. The land belonged to two orphan brothers, so the Prophet bought it from them. Then with the help of the people of the city, he built a Mosque on the land, and a house for himself. |
| The Prophet?s first job was to unite his followers, so he first taught them how to be brothers and sisters to each other. That meant being more than just good friends, but treating each other like they were from the same family. In the end, each Muslim from Yathrib took one Muslim from Mecca as his/her brother/sister. |
