My
favorite saying is "Good comes from
bad" and one of our least favorite trips
was one to the Silverbank in the north
Atlantic which is called the nursery and where the
Humpback whale bears and raises her calf. On the
flight to the
Turks and Caicos, a couple was sitting
in front of us and I asked if they were
going to be on the boat with us.
They were a British couple and were
taking the same trip, so we began to
talk. For some reason, the four of
us bonded and we spent most of the week
with them. Little did we know this
would be the beginning of a deep,
important friendship. In the subsequent
years we have traveled with Mavis and
Allan and they became like family, in
spite of the miles separating us. When
we were in Antarctica together we were
concerned by Allan's coughing but it
didn't seem serious. However, in August we found
that his cough was indeed serious and he
was diagnosed with lung cancer. This
trip to England was originally planned to be our
opportunity
to see Allan, perhaps for the last time
which would have been difficult, but
something we wanted to do.
Unfortunately, the cancer was widespread and we lost
him in
December. We want everyone to meet one
of the kindest, most gentle, wisest,
gentlemen we have ever known. We will
miss him but our lives are better for
having known him.
