Questions to resolve.
- Who were the parents of Joseph Hollander, and where did they live. Tulcea or Galati?
- Joseph and Sabina married in Galati, did they live there before leaving?
- Were there other Hollanders (cousins, etcc) there?
- Can we confirm Walter home address for Brraila?
- Were there children other than Rebecca, IIsaac and Sabina?
- Did the family use other family names priior to leaving?
- What became of families of Jack, Morris, Lena and Anna Hollander?

Also, I would love a clearer picture of the Walter family tree and the descendants of Isaac and Rebecca.

Origins of Hollander family name
The best explanation I have ever read explaining the "Hollander" family name was in a book I found while at university written by an American rabbi explaining family names. He said that "Hollander" was adopted by Jews living in towns in Poland that encouraged Dutch settlement - they had reduced taxes and none of the religious restrictions from other regions to encourage Dutch farmers to develop different parts of Poland. The account I read said that these towns were called "Hollandery".

However, I have never read any account anywhere verifying this. Nonetheless, the history of Dutch settlements in Poland is quite confirmable. According to the account below, these towns were called "Oleder" and "Hollenderski" in Poland. The settlements moved along the floodplains of the Vistula River, where it seems land owners wanted to encourage the land reclamation and protection skills of Dutch settlers. The Vistula runs from Gdansk in the Baltic, southward towards Krakow. A search on Jewishgen of Polish database records of Hollanders shows that indeed, the name Hollander was most common in Southern Poland (Krakow in particular) along with variations Hollender and Hollanderski. The link below doesn't mention any Jewish links, but probably gives some key clues as to where and why Jewish people may have first used the name "Hollander".

I found another accounting for the surname from a Holocaust survivor from a town called "Ochuwa", possibly Stara Tura (aka. Otura) in Slovakia Today with the surname Hollander (at the head of the Carpathian mountains that run through Moldova down to Galati). The account of his family name is as follows:

Hollander was born in 1925 in Ochuwa, a small town in the Carpathian mountains, which was then Czechoslovakia. Originally, Hollander's family name was Albergezie. They were Sephardim who left Spain at the time of the expulsion. First they fled to Holland, and then, when they arrived in Eastern Europe, their name was changed to Hollander to reflect this.

Finally, another story here outlining how Hollanders were quite big in Slovakia. They were the first Jews allowed into the community of Presov and were leaders of the Jewish community there.

Why Would Jews Move to Romania in the 19th Century, and Why Would They Then Leave?

What family accounts we have generally seem to indicate that the Hollanders and Walters moved to Romania, and were not deeply established there. This being the case, it seems highly likely that they were "Sudits". Sudits were foreigners, predominantly Jews invited during into Romania during the first half of the 19th century to help encourage the economy and agriculture. They had no property or citizenship rights, but substantial tax free privileges that encouraged immigration, particularly from those regions of Austria-Hungary, Russia, Prussia, France and England. Things started well, but the privileges of Sudits caused tensions with local Jewish communities, as well as resentment of poor Romanian peasants.

"By the last half of the 19 th century after Prince Carol Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was crowned King Carol I (1881), legal anti-Semitism was enacted by the government. Jews were excluded from naturalization, denied civil rights by being declared foreigners, their children were expelled from public schools, and their properties and businesses were confiscated. Jews were prohibited from having professions, business licenses, or even peddling. Jews were denied previously held rights of propination (sales of alcohol) and lost their leases to the inns and pubs. Eventually, the experiment of having Jews reside in Romania as privileged guests failed. Jews were murdered or injured in the ensuing riots. Mobs looted businesses and residences, while police either looked aside or were directly involved. Some older Jews remained, but 30 % of the families were forced to emigrate by the end of World War I. A unique group of very poor, but highly motivated, young Jews (Fusgeyers) walked from Moldavia across Europe to Antwerp and sailed to America."

Conscription into the Military a Motivation for Migration?
A fascinating examination of the stories that Polly mentions regarding evasion of conscription being a reason that Jews fled Russia, and led to them changing their names, and stories of people harming themselves to avoid service. Althought the author questions some aspects of these stories as old wives tales, nonetheless, it is verifiable that once the draft was introduced for Jews in 1827, Jews were drafted in disporportionately high numbers, legally from the age of 12 and often from the age of 8 and forced to serve for 25 years in the army (counted from when they turned 18). There was a strategy of evangelising Jewish conscripts in the military as part of a programme of attempting to assimilate Jews through restrictions and incentives for conversion. Jewish community leaders were made responsible for filling conscription quotas that led to the emergence of "khappers" that would raid and snatch children for bounties paid to meet these quotas. Rapid Jewish emigration from Russia only would have exaccerbated this situation, and provided a good enough reason to cross the Danube over into Romania out of the reach of consciption and the many other restrictions that the Russians placed on Jews.
