Terra Vitae is a publicly owned vineyard company producing high quality Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling on 40 hectares of land in the Awatere Valley. Interest in Terra Vitae was immediate and a public association of over 300 members has invested over $9,500NZ each over a three-year period. Terra Vitae comprises three vineyards in the Hawkes Bay region, Ngakirikiri, Twyford Gravels and the Keltern Valley Nursery and a further expansion of vine area in the Taylors Pass Vineyard in Awatere Valley, Marlborough. A party of 150 investors recently visited the Awatere region to see how their investment was blossoming and to hear from Chairman of Villa Maria Estate, George Fistonich, on the developments in place in the Marlborough region. The Ngakirikiri vineyard has recently completed planting of four red and one white varietal grapes: Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Chardonnay. Whilst planting at Twyford Gravels has just begun. At the Keltern Valley Nursery, Villa Maria have begun growing their own vine rootstock, due to a shortage of planting material in New Zealand. In Taylors Pass in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough the planting of over 72 hectares of grape varietals are due to begin in the foreseeable future.
