Gilks joins National Bank board 

Dunedin businessman John Gilks has been appointed a South Island director
of the National Bank.                                                    

Mr Gilks (60), the managing director of the St Andrews Group, has been   
active in the local business community, particularly through Otago       
Business Beyond 2000, where he has led several campaigns to retain air   
services to the city and to attract or retain business in Dunedin.       

He said in an interview his appointment recognised the importance rural  
and business banking played in the success of the bank's southern        
operations.                                                              

The chairman of Port Otago, Mr Gilks is also deputy chairman of Fisher   
and Paykel Appliances, which has a manufacturing operation near Mosgiel, 
a director of Chalmers Properties Ltd and Pacific Edge Biotechnology Ltd.
