On Saturday The Napier Harrier Club trialed a new concept race along the riverflats at Waiohiki. This was a four person open handicap teams race over 4km, with two turning cones 1km either side of the start/finish position.
The eight team contest resulted in an easy victory for the combination starting off a two minute handicap. Chris Wong (17.41) and Marilyn Brown (17.43) laid the foundations by completing the course first and second respectively. They were ably backed up by Ben Fulton (5th) and Malcolm Lochrie (7th) to give the team 15pts. Their nearest rivals were the last team to start, off a handicap of 7 minutes, Ryan Woolley, Shane Vincent, Eric Speakman and Craig Mathers who finished won 50 points! Cameron Poole-Smith (off 6 mins) ran confidently to finish third, just ahead of 11 year old Toa Elphick who recorded a splendid 15.58 for the 4km.
The fastest time was recorded by 17 year old Woolley (13.04), while Vincent signalled his timely return from a serious illness with a smart 13.41, just ahead of two fifteen year olds Speakman (13.42) and Poole-Smith (13.56). Natasha Town-Warner (9.17) recorded the fastest half leg, just one second quicker than Ieuan Edmonds.
Twelve year old Kaden Hall was the lucky recipient of the $150 sports equipment voucher donated by the Spanish Lady Motel.
