Joll's Farm CANCELLED

Alternative event at Tareha Park
Guppy Rd, Taradale

8 June, 2006

(Sealed handicap transfered to Provincial Cross Country)

Cats don't like to get their feet wet.
When the Interclub competition against Hastings was cancelled because of flooding on the Matapiro venue, Napier Harriers hastily arranged an alternative contest around Tareha Park and along the neighbouring riverflats. In gloriously warm and sunny conditions the competitors biggest hurdle was battling the strong westerly on the outward journey of each lap.
In the 3.4km event Toa Elphick (14.41) bounced back from his recent bout of the flu, to win comfortably from Charlie Chittenden (15.23) and Annie Creagh (15.53).
During the 6.7km contest, 13 year old Jack Needes (27.31) ran with strong purpose over a distance which truly tested his undoubted stamina. He was followed by Jill Fuller (28.25), who returned to racing after a month off to recover from a calf muscle tear. Third place went to another 13 year old Brendan Speakman (28.25), while 16 year old Danielle Kiely (32.09) was the first junior woman.
Craig Mathers stormed away from the competition during the first lap of the 10.1km senior race, and was first home in 38.37. Runner up was Mark (I cant find any mud) Speakman (41.12), who finished strongly over the last 3km to hold off Peter Gillies (41.21).
