The blue skies on Monday morning were welcomed by the seventy competitors and dozen marshalls for this year's Queen's Birthday Open Handicap Road Races.
Jack Needes produced a brilliant effort to win the Harris/Frame Cup just ahead of Toa Elphick, while Charlie Chittenden finished strongly for third. Needes( 17:41) recorded the fastest time for Boys 14 grade, and the very smart 19:05 by Elphick was the quickest amongst the strong Boys 12 group.
Patrick McGirr resumed his reputation of running off course, but still had a handy advantage to score victory and the Fred Brock Cup in the Junior Men's Grade. Eric Speakman finished strongly for second ahead of Stefan Smith. Smith recorded the fastest lap, an impressive 15:01 for the 4.5km circuit.
In the two lap event, 70 year old Don McLeod proved there was plenty of life left in his legs by winning the Queen's Birthday Road Race Cup, by 27 seconds. Chris Wong displayed a huge improvement to finish second, over a minute ahead of "flying milkman" Frank Price. Craig Mathers (33:46) secured fastest time, while two Hastings harriers, Alistair Howard (34:14) and Cliff Fellingham (34:19) registered impressive efforts. Their efforts, however, couldn't prevent Napier Harriers retaining the teams trophy, the Sweeney Anniversary Cup for the fifth successive year, with Mathers, Shane McCormack, Peter Gillies and Mark Speakman's accumulated time of 2:19:25 beating the Hastings club by 5m16s.
Laura Nagel won the Sovereign Cup by 9 seconds from Annie Creagh and Holly Edmonds. Nagel (18:31) was the quickest in the Girls 14 grade, while 11 year old Annie Creagh ran a marvellous 19.30. Ashley Aitken made a welcome return to harriers to win the Junior Women's section and register the fastest time, a very sharp 17:47. German exchange student Livia Mueller just pipped Annieke Engels in the last few strides for second place.
A loyal stalwart of the event, Andrea Williams, finally got her name on the Jubilee Cup, finishing almost a minute a head of Marilyn Brown and Gina Finlayson. She was also the quickest women with an excellent time of 18.14.
The estimated time walking event was won by Paul McGettigan (28:04) who was only a second away from his estimated time and also recorded the fastest lap.
The Napier Harrier club was honoured by the appearance of Gordon Vogtherr, a six time provincial champion over 50 years ago, and he generously made himself available to hand out the trophies at the prizegiving in the Napier Harrier Club's rooms.
