"Marett Madness"

The Marett Madness Relay produced an exciting finish with the trio of Shayna Heywood, Danielle Kiely and Steven Smith winning in 55.38, just five seconds clear of the team of Holly Edmonds, Anieke Engels and Shane Vincent. Amongst the field of fifteen teams the early pacesetters Charlie Chittenden, Ben Fulton and Ryan Woolley (57.21) completed the course in third place.
Although he overshot the turnaround point after crossing the Waiohiki Bridge, Charlie Chittenden (20.15) still dominated the first lap to establish a handy lead. Their team eventually surrendered this superiority and a strong effort from Engels gave Vincent a 10 second advantage over Smith going into a dramatic anchor leg.
Running newcomer Vincent (14:39) gallantly held off the young challenger until 200 metres from the finish when Smith (14.24) edged ahead.
