Napier Harriers held the first races of their open handicap series on a hastily arranged alternative course at Park Island.
The heavy conditions, two hills, two ditches, a small rockwall and a bridge combined to produce a popular challenge for all competitors.
Samuel Hall revelled in the conditions to win the one lap event by 9 seconds from a hounding Toa Elphick. In a great handicapping exercise only 23 seconds covered 3rd to 11th place, with Tyler Hambleton leading home this cluster. Elphick (9.09) recorded the fastest time, ahead of Charlie Chittenden (9.20) and Annie Creagh (9.29).
In the Mens 16 contest, Eric Speakman displayed tremendous form to snare the pacesetter Ben Fulton 150 metres from the finish. Speakman (16.08) was fastest ahead of Cameron Poole-Smith (16.31).
Aleesha Heywood won the Womens 16 grade by 11 seconds from Larissa Street, who successfully held off the late spurt by Sarah Starkey. Although running off the course Anieke Engels (20.35) was still the quickest from Danielle Kiely (20.36) and Starkey (20.54).
Sheila Smidt won the 4km mixed Womens Grade by 13 seconds from the pursuers Shayna Heywood and Marilyn Brown. Brown (20.48) was fastest ahead of Heywood (21.30) and Cheryl Simpson (21.45).
Steven Smith looked impressive in winning the 6km Mens 19 grade and registered the fastest time 22.56.
Alan Simpson won the Senior Mens race by 11 seconds from Craig Eustace. The impressive resurgence of Steve Lindsay over the last kilometre earned him a third place finish. Shane Vincent (24.18) recorded the fastest time, from Craig Mathers (25.06) and Shane McCormack (25.22).
